Há dois anos Lonnie Bunch III (muito gostam os americanos destas tretas do II, III...) veio à Lusitânia falar sobre o papel dos museus, e a escravatura, e o passado colonial etc. O texto promocional da conferência na CULTURGEST dizia: "Lonnie G. Bunch III, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, explores the critical need for museums around the world to work collaboratively and creatively to recover and recognize the painful legacies of the slave trade, in order to promote social justice and new visions for the future".
The Smithsonian Institution is closing its diversity office and freezing all federal hiring. The decision will affect dozens of American museums, research centers and libraries, as well as the National Zoo.
The move to eliminate the Office of Diversity comes in the wake of an executive order from President Trump that describes diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, or DEI, as "illegal and immoral." The Smithsonian is not a federal agency. But much of its billion dollar budget comes from federal appropriations. Two-thirds of its nearly 6,500 employees are federal workers.
The Smithsonian Institution will close its Office of Diversity, a spokesperson confirmed Tuesday, only a week after President Donald Trump directed all federal diversity, equity and inclusion offices and staff be laid off.
The Washington Post first reported that Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III emailed staff announcing the closure, calling it the “first step” to address the new federal policy.
E Lonnie Bunch III, secretário-geral da Smithsonian Institution? Meteu a viola no saco, ora essa.
